These princes started a rebellion during the reign of a relative in order to seize the throne for themselves. They should be distinguished from rival princes who waged a war of succession when the ruler had recently died (or was otherwise incapacitated such as being deposed, imprisoned, expelled, fallen seriously ill etc.) and no other ruler had consolidated their reign yet.
