The 2024 Miami Grand Prix (officially known as the Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix 2024) is a Formula One motor race set to be held on May 5, 2024, at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami Gardens, Florida. It is the sixth round of the 2024 Formula One World Championship and the second Grand Prix weekend of the season to utilise the sprint format.

Background[edit]

The event is being held across the weekend on May 3–5 at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami Gardens for the third time in the circuit's history. The Grand Prix is the sixth round of the 2024 Formula One World Championship, the third running of the Miami Grand Prix, and the first time that it features the sprint format.[2][3]

Championship standings before the race[edit]

Going into the weekend, Max Verstappen led the World Drivers' Championship with 110 points, 25 points ahead of his teammate Sergio Pérez in second, and 34 ahead of Charles Leclerc in third. Red Bull Racing, with 195 points, led the Constructors Championship from Ferrari and McLaren, who are second and third with 151 and 96 points, respectively.[4]

Entrants[edit]

The drivers and teams are the same as the season entry list with no additional stand-in drivers for the race.[5]

Tyre choices[edit]

Tyre supplier Pirelli brought the C2, C3, and C4 tyre compounds (designated hard, medium, and soft, respectively) for teams to use at the event.[6]

Penalties[edit]

Daniel Ricciardo of RB carries a three-place grid penalty for the main race for overtaking Nico Hülkenberg of Haas under safety car conditions at the preceding Chinese Grand Prix.[7]

Practice[edit]

The only free practice session was held on May 3, 2024, at 12:30 local time (UTC–4), and was topped by Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing ahead of Oscar Piastri of McLaren and Carlos Sainz Jr. of Ferrari.[1] A red flag was called early into the session when the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc spun out in turn 16 and was unable to move.[8][9]

Sprint qualifying[edit]

Sprint qualifying was held on May 3, 2024, at 16:30 local time (UTC–4), and determined the starting grid order for the sprint.[1]

Sprint qualifying report[edit]

During the first segment, the Sauber of Valtteri Bottas nearly collided with Oscar Piastri of McLaren as he was starting his flying lap.[10] The incident was investigated by the stewards after the sprint qualifying session.[11] Alexander Albon of Williams had his initial track time, that placed him in 16th, deleted for track limits, dropping him down to 20th. In the second segment, Mercedes was investigated for pit lane infringement after team personnel were seen without protective gear as Lewis Hamilton was entering the pit lane.[10] The stewards took no further actions.[12] In SQ3, drivers began running soft tyres with the Haas of Nico Hülkenberg making his first lap in the remaining four minutes of the segment.[10]

In SQ1 and SQ2, Lando Norris of McLaren, whose car received upgrades, set the fastest lap in both sessions.[10] However, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing, who found difficulties in his tyres, took pole position and was joined by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari in the grid's front row.[10] Verstappen's teammate Sergio Pérez qualified in third with Daniel Ricciardo of RB joining him in fourth, the team’s best result for the season. After performing well in the first two segments, Norris qualified ninth.[10] Bottas was given a three-place grid penalty for the sprint for impeding Piastri, dropping him to 20th from 18th in the starting grid.[13]

Notes

  • ^1Valtteri Bottas received a three-place grid penalty for the sprint for impeding Oscar Piastri in SQ1.[13]
  • ^2Alexander Albon qualified 20th, but was required to start the sprint from the pit lane as his car was modified during parc fermé conditions.[15]

Sprint[edit]

The sprint was held on May 4, 2024, at 12:00 local time (UTC–4), and was run for 19 laps.[1]

Sprint race report[edit]

Alexander Albon started from the pit lane due to suspension changes during parc fermé. Going into turn one, Lando Norris was collected a three-car pileup consisting of Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, with Stroll pushing Alonso into Norris' right-rear. This spun the McLaren on the track, leaving it with terminal damage, Alonso with reduced performance, and a retirement for Stroll. Stewards investigated the incident and determined against further action. Meanwhile, Esteban Ocon had already received a ten-second penalty for contact with Charles Leclerc before the race; Ocon had to replace the front wing. Ocon would serve the penalty during the ensuing safety car period. Meanwhile, Daniel Ricciardo, having taken advantage of Sergio Pérez making a mistake, defended his third position until Pérez overtook the Australian on lap five. Ricciardo had to defend against Carlos Sainz Jr. and the sole remaining McLaren of Oscar Piastri.[16]

Meanwhile, Kevin Magnussen was defending his Haas against Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes driver was pushed off the track, while Magnussen received two ten-second penalties for dangerous driving. Yuki Tsunoda took the opportunity to overtake both cars. Hamilton received a drive-through penalty following the race, which was converted into a 20-second time penalty, due to speeding in the pit lane during the safety car period. This moved Tsunoda up to the points; Pierre Gasly of Alpine barely missed out on points, and Logan Sargeant achieved his joint highest finish after the 2023 United States Grand Prix, finishing in tenth. Ricciardo also achieved his joint highest finish after the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, finishing fourth.[16]

Max Verstappen achieved the fastest lap, led all laps and won the sprint ahead of Charles Leclerc and Sergio Pérez.[16]
