Project notes[edit]
I just created this wikiproject, after several months of contemplating doing so. I hope everyone working on hurricane articles will get involved. I went ahead and wrote a bunch of guidelines, basically based on current practices...naturally since this is something I just wrote it doesn't necessarily represent community consensus and needs to be discussed. That discussion should probably go here for now...although eventually we may make these pages a little more structured. For a general TODO list, see the "tasks" item on the project page. Extending the yearly articles for Tropical cyclones in XXXX back to 1900[edit]
Inspired by the discussion about the RFC for the Tornadoes of XXXXarticles, I wanted to have a similar discussion about tropical cyclones. Every tropical cyclone is listed in a yearly overview going back to 1991. The current one is Tropical cyclones in 2024. I believe that should be extended back to 1900, as an official goal of the project. It will take some time and some research. I only recently wrote the article on 1936 Pacific typhoon season, and I found a lot of deadly storms that Wikipedia had nothing about previously. Going back to 1900 will be the beginning, as later on it should be extended back to 1800, but one century at a time. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:23, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
- I like the concept of this but I worry that the coverage will be rather limited for most basins going back to 1900 with the exception of the North Atlantic and maybe the Eastern North Pacific. Most SHEM basins have sparse data, if any, on cyclones back then. JayTee⛈️ 13:02, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- @JayTee32: While I fully acknowledge that details about TCs back then can be hard to come by, I suspect that you are doing the other basins a disservice, especially since I have details about tropical cyclones in Fiji back to 1831 and a possible TC in February 1643.Jason Rees (talk) 13:48, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Jason Rees, I'm not trying to oppose the coverage of cyclones in other basins. I just want to make sure these potential articles don't exclude them or become overly focused on storms in the NHC's AOR due to the difficulty of coming across sources. JayTee⛈️ 13:52, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- That's why I brought this up. The NHC basins have pretty good coverage going back to 1900, and as a result, our resources reflect that really well. They're more often lacking in other basins. So, having an article for Tropical cyclones in 1933 would figure out the damaging storms from that year. Sure, right now there's only 1933 Atlantic hurricane season and 1933 Pacific hurricane season, but we know from IBTRACS that [https://ncics.org/ibtracs/index.php?name=YearBasin-1933 there were 29 WPAC storms, 16 in the NIO, and 13 in the southern hemisphere. Did any of the storms cause impacts? Probably. The 1930s Australian region cyclone seasons is woefully incomplete, and that's for an English-speaking area only a century ago. There's not even an article right now for the Pacific typhoon season, where there's usually several deadly storms each year. So eventually having these yearly articles, if researched properly, will help close a major gap in coverage. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:36, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
