Motijheel Thana (Bengali: মতিঝিল থানা) is a thana of Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. Motijheel C/A, located within the boundaries of the thana, is the major business and commercial hub of Dhaka city and has more offices and business institutions than any other part of the city[4] and is the home to the largest number of corporate headquarters in the nation. Many news, magazines, print and other media publishers are based inside the CBD area. Motijheel Thana hosts the Dhaka Railway Station, Dhaka's main railway station. The General Post Office at Motijheel is considered the zero point of Dhaka. The iconic landmark of Shapla in Shapla Square is the central point where all major roads to the place converge. The thana was formed in 1976.
Etymology[edit]
The name Motijheel is a combination of two Bengali words Moti (Bengali: মতি), which means pearl and Jheel (Bengali: ঝিল) meaning lake. So the name Motijheel literally means the "Lake of Pearl".
Geography[edit]
Motijheel Thana covers an area of 3.69 square kilometres (1.42 sq mi). It is bounded by thana of Rampura to the north Khilgaon Thana to the north and east, Sutrapur Thana to the south, Sabujbagh Thana to the east, and Ramna Model Thana to the northwest.[5]
Demographics[edit]
According to the 2011 census, Motijheel Thana has a population of 210,006 with an average household size of 4.5 members and an average literacy rate of 80.4% against the national average of 51.8% literacy.[2]
Education[edit]
According to Banglapedia, T & T High School is a notable secondary school.[4] Notre Dame College, Dhaka, Notre Dame University Bangladesh is located in Motijheel Thana. The main branch of Ideal School & College and Motijheel Model School & College is also located in Motijheel. There is also a government primary school called the Ideal Government Primary School. Other schools and colleges in the thana include Bangladesh Bank High School, Post Office High School, Motijheel Government Girls' High School, Motijheel Government Boys' High School, Shantibagh High School, Shahjahanpur Railway School, Miraj Abbas Degree College, and Abujar Ghifari College.[6]
