Xylaria mali Fromme


  • Observation Notes: Several Xylaria mali fungi growing at Montgomery, Alabama.
  • Recognised by sight: Stromata cylindric to clavate, terete to highly flattened near apices, unbranched to branched from the base or near apices, solitary or several to many arising from common base, with acute sterile apices or, occasionally, rounded apices, with long, short, or obsolete stipes arising directly from substrate or from reddish pannose bases or long rooting bases. Total length, including rooting bases where present, 3-7(-14) cm x 0.2-0.7(-1) cm diam (FIGS. 1, 4). Stromata at first white (appearing as white-washed), becoming black, but usually with traces of juvenile white outer layer (FIGS. 1-5); interior white. Surface usually longitudinally wrinkled and roughened from protruding perithecia; ostiolar openings umbilicate or slightly papillate.
