Summary

Description
English: Black-and-white photographic view of the exterior of Westover Church, Charles City Courthouse vicinity, Charles City County, Virginia, by the American photographer and photojournalist Frances Benjamin Johnston. Dated 1930. The church was used in the early 19th century as a barn, and was later used as a stable by Union forces during the Civil War. The church was restored in the interim by members of the Berkeley and Shirley families, some of whom are buried within the churchyard. In 1867, the church was again used for worship, and was restored again in 1909. Photograph forms part of the Frances Benjamin Johnston archives at the Library of Congress, which were donated in perpetuity to the Library by the photographer, hence there are no restrictions on publication.
