Description
English: Victoria Peak on the north side of the Robinson Creek valley has a very dark color that gives the false impression it's getting shaded by clouds. These are made of older rocks that sit on top of the younger Sierra Nevada (of California) granite batholith. Their long journey to this location began as things like undersea volcanic seamounts that hit the edge of continental plate and got subducted, metamorphizing them into modified rocks, then later pushed up, forming a pre-Sierra Nevada mountain range called the Nevada Orogeny. Volcanic magma pushed up under these rocks without breaking through, but cooling off underneath, creating the younger granite of the Sierra Nevada (of California) today, but also sometimes breaking through as lava flows. So, lots of different types of rock are found in the Sierra Nevada (of California), including the famous "mother lode" gold veins.
