We fought our way through one barbed-wire entanglement after the other and intohis trenches, which certainly were wonder-ful. They had been living there for aboutfoiu- years, and evidently thought theplace could not be taken, ior the fires inthe stoves were still going when we gotthere. The trenches all had wooden walksin them; many of the dugouts were ofconcrete, well furnished and heated. Allof them had electric fights. They had finevegetable-gardens, and we got a fine bunchof sausages, wines, and jams. I surelywould like to have stayed there awhile,but after cleaning them up we had to goforward, and for se^en days we droveJerry in front of us, and for two days weheld the line.
