Description

Installation by Steven Hull, "Balcony," installation view, 2013. The image illustrates later period and body of work in Steven Hull's career in the later 2010s when he presented hybrid projects—mixed-media installations that collapse disparate styles and disciplines into experiential wholes and challenge preconceived ideas about art and its functioning. These exhibitions explored the ways that disciplines interact, overlap and create meaning, using theatrical tableaux of found objects, handmade assemblage sculptures, paintings and drawings, sound and motion—in this case, color-field paintings, marionettes, and a moving model train, among other elements. This work and this body of work have been publicly exhibited in prominent venues and museums and discussed in major art and daily press publications.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a later period and body of work in Steven Hull's career in the 2010s: his hybrid, mixed-media installations that collapse disparate styles and disciplines into experiential wholes and challenge preconceived ideas about art and its functioning. These exhibitions explored the ways that disciplines interact, overlap and create meaning, using theatrical tableaux of found objects, handmade assemblage sculptures, marionettes and masks, diverse paintings and drawings, sound and motion involving carnival, circus, sea and erotic themes. Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize the key body of work and exhibition strategy, which brought him ongoing recognition from art and daily press. Hull's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Steven Hull, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.

The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made.
