Description
English: Ruwanweliseya is a magnificent Stupa in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, that is one of the world’s tallest monuments, with a height of 92 m and circumference of 292 m. The Stupa was built by King Dutugemunu c. 140 B.C., who became lord of all Sri Lanka after a war in which the Chola King Elara was defeated. The compound of Ruwanwelisaya is supported by stone elephants, and the surrounding wall is decorated with 1,900 figures of elephants - 475 on each side.

The Stupa is also known as Swarnamali Seya, Ratnamali Chetiya and the Maha Thupa. The Ruwanwelisaya dagoba is venerated and has become a pinnacle for Buddhists all round the world as it contains the largest portion of relics from the pyre of the sacred body of the Buddha. According to the ancient chronicle Dhatuwamsa, one eighth of the whole-body-relics of the Buddha has been deposited in the Stupa making it one of the treasured places of worship for Buddhists.
