Masks in the room of the house of Sallust, marked Q.The vast size of the ancient theatres renderednecessary expedients only resorted to in modernpantomime, where the painted face of the clownaffords some likeness to two of those before us.The female characters acted by men must havebeen ill assisted by the other masks, of whichthe tragic intention is indicated by the cup andhellebore. The surroundino; ornaments are co-pied from various parts of this house; the lower(6) is red and blue, upon grounds of pink andwhite.
