Almost all the pillars are differently ornamented, and one in particular is very unlike the rest, having a h u m a n head on the inside of the arch.Two miles south east of Sligo is the romantic and beautiful Lough Gill, containing many wooded islands of all dimensions, on the largestof which — Church Island— are somein terestingruins. Fromthe watersedge of thesouthernshores of thelake the rug-ged gneissmountains ofSlieve Daeaneand Slish ab-ruptly rise toan elevatioiof about 870 feet, their steep acclivities covered with plantations.
