English: Diagram of MacArthur Maze (East Bay Distribution Structure), the eastern end of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, as originally completed in 1936. Splits (Sx) and Merges (Mx) are shown. Drawn from aerial photograph.

Traffic to the Bay Bridge:

  • Westbound (WB) from 38th St (MacArthur Blvd): M3-S2-M4, e.g., enters structure at merge with NB Cypress Ave (M3), avoid split to Eastshore Freeway (S2), merges with SB Eastshore Freeway (M4)
  • NB from Cypress: M3-S2-M4
  • SB from Eastshore: S1-M4

Traffic from Bay Bridge:

  • EB to 38th St: S4-M2-S3
  • SB to Cypress: S4-M2-S3
  • NB to Eastshore: S4-M1

Avoid Bay Bridge:

  • NB: M3-S2-M1
  • SB: S1-M2-S3
Note the interchange does not provide for travel between Cypress and 38th/MacArthur directly. The portion of the structure between M3-S2 and M2-S3 is called a weaving lane, so named for the maneuvers that NB/SB traffic between Eastshore and Cypress or WB/EB traffic between Bay Bridge and MacArthur must take - merge with traffic, then move to the left lanes to continue travel. These weaving lanes were eliminated in 1955.
