Summary

Description

La Canée est construite sur l'emplacement de la ville antique de Kydonia.

Pendant la période néopalatiale, Kydonia est un centre important. Il en est de même durant les périodes romaines et byzantines.

Les vénitiens y construisent une forteresse sur la colline qui domine le port, ainsi qu'une cathédrale, un palais, un théâtre et de nombreuses maisons pour les nobles.

Des remparts sont élevés en 1537 pour se protéger d'une invasion turque mais la ville est prise par eux en 1645.

Aujourd'hui, La Canée est la 2ème ville de Crète, c'est celle qui a le mieux conservé les traces de son passé.
