Summary

La fontaine Céleste qui se situe au centre de la place des cocotiers a été inscrite à l’inventaire supplémentaire des monuments historiques le 13/08/1992

Le 26 mai 1892, lors de la séance du conseil municipal de Nouméa, lecture est faite d’une lettre adressée à la mairie par M.Mahoux. Sculpteur de métier, celui-ci propose ses talents pour l’édification d’une fontaine en centre-ville.

Le projet est voté en août de cette même année et M. Mahoux entreprend une œuvre qu’il achèvera quatre ans plus tard. La pierre, extraite de la carrière du Mont Bérard est taillée sur place par la main d’œuvre pénale. Seuls les blocs destinés à réaliser la statue sont transportés dans l’atelier du sculpteur. Par trois fois, Mahoux dut s’appliquer à reproduire les traits de son modèle, la jeune et belle « Céleste ».

Non content de son premier travail, le sculpteur décida de recommencer une seconde statue. Mais à peine eut-il achevé son œuvre que l’atelier fut dévasté par des actes de vandalisme. Finalement, la fontaine est inaugurée en 1895. En 1994, des travaux de restauration sont entrepris. Les circuits d’eau et d’électricité sont refaits, les bassins sont étanchéisés et l’érosion de la statue de Céleste est stoppée grâce à des moyens techniques modernes. Cette fontaine est le point zéro, d'où partent tout les kilométrages sur la Nouvelle Calédonie. ( source: www.province-sud.nc )
