| Description |
The 'captain of God's army' appears to Joshua near Jericho. Above them the heavens open from which cherubs fly. On of them is holding a snake biting its own tail as the symbol of eternity. Joshua is depicted wearing a suit of armor holding a sword and a shield in his hands. Part of five paintings that served as wall hangings of the achterzaal (back room) of Nieuwegracht 6 in Utrecht. Of the sixth wall hanging by Jan van Bijlert only a fragment remains, now in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. |
