Afrikaans: Die Chavonnes-battery in die kloktoringarea van die V & A, Kaapstad, is in 1724 gebou as eersteling van 'n reeks kusvestings om aggressors ter see af te skrik. Dit is na goewerneur Chavonnes vernoem en die stewige vuurplatform, toegerus met 16 groot kanonne, was geskik om uit hierdie bastion as waghond van die baai op te tree en akkurate vuur op vyandige skepe te rig.
Die Chavonnes-battery is in 1860 deels gesloop en die klip is heraangewend vir die Alfred-bekken, terwyl die kloktoring as nuwe wagpos opgerig is. In 1999 is die Chavonnes-battery herontdek, opgegrawe en word bewaar in 'n aanskoulike toonbeeld van argitektoniese vernuf. English: Chavonnes Battery, Clock Tower precinct, V & A, Cape Town
Built in 1724, the first in a range of coastal defences to deter sea-borne aggressors and named after the Governor, its stable firing platform with 16 large cannons enabled gunners to bring accurate fire to bear on hostile ships from its perch as watchdog of the bay. The Chavonnes Battery was partially demolished in 1860 its stone reused for the Alfred Basin and the Clock Tower was built as its new sentinel. In 1999, the Chavonnes Battery was rediscovered, excavated and conserved in a spectacular example of architectural ingenuity.
