NFC's description of the apple is: "Triploid. A chance seedling found on the farm of John Ball, Wilmington, Massachusetts, U.S.A. in about 1740. Introduced by Colonel Baldwin in about 1780. Fruits are coarse textured and juicy but lack flavour. It was once an important commercial variety in the U.S.A."
