Summary

Description
English: A fruiting shoot of Chile's Tayu tree, Archidasyphyllum diacanthoides (Less.) P.L.Ferreira, Saavedra & Groppo, a curious arborescent member of the daisy family, Asteraceae, which can form a tree 15m in height. The scaly infructescence, much like that of a knapweed (genus Centaurea), has unfurled like a 'dandelion clock' to reveal the ripe fruits - each equipped with a fluffy pappus, ready for dispersal by the wind. Note also mature leaves of shoot, dark green and leathery in texture, each bearing a terminal spine, and woody stem base, bearing paired spines. The bark of the Tayu tree is a considered an excellent remedy (both topical and oral) for blunt trauma in the folk medicine of Chile. Shoot borne by a small, container-grown specimen of this rare plant, purchased from a specialist nursery in Frampton-on-Severn, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom.
