Summary

Description
English: A U.S. Navy Douglas A-4E Skyhawk (BuNo 152100) of Attack Squadron 163 (VA-163) "Saints", circa 1966, armed with 227 kg (500 lb) Mk 82 "Snakeye" bombs. VA-163 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 16 (CVW-16) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CVA-34) for a deployment to Vietnam from 26 May to 16 November 1966.
The A-4E 152100 (AH-301) was the personal aircraft of the squadron CO, (then) Commander Wynn F. Foster. It was lost on 23 July 1966 when Foster was flying his 163rd combat mission over Vietnam. When antiaircraft artillery hit the A-4E it severed his right arm at the elbow. Bleeding profusely, his still-gloved hand lying on the starboard console, Foster flew his plane out over the Tonkin Gulf and ejected. The plane crashed but Foster was picked up by the guided missile cruiser USS Reeves (DLG-24).
