Death Stranding 2: On The Beach[1] is an upcoming action game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is the sequel to Death Stranding (2019) and the second game from Kojima Productions and director Hideo Kojima as an independent entity, as well as the studio's second collaboration with SIE. The title will feature the previous game's central characters Sam Porter Bridges, Fragile and Higgs, reprised by actors Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux and Troy Baker, respectively. They are joined by additional characters portrayed by Elle Fanning and Shioli Kutsuna. The game features the likenesses of Mad Max co-creator George Miller and Turkish film director Fatih Akin.

Kojima began writing a sequel to the game some time prior to 2020, but reworked his narrative from scratch to reflect the impact of COVID-19 on the worldwide population. By the time the story was completed, hints of Death Stranding launching a new franchise for Kojima Productions had been insinuated, before a sequel was confirmed as in development in May 2022 by Reedus himself. The game was officially announced in December 2022 alongside the confirmation of the new cast members' respective involvements.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is set to release for PlayStation 5.

Development[edit]

In March 2020, during the promotion of the then-upcoming release of Death Stranding (2019) on Microsoft Windows, actor Norman Reedus, who portrays the game's main playable protagonist Sam Porter Bridges, alluded to the possibility of continued collaboration with Hideo Kojima, who wrote, directed, produced and primarily designed the game. Speaking to WIRED during a Q&A session as part of their Autocomplete series on YouTube, Reedus revealed that following the completion of the game, the pair were "in talks to do other stuff", and that he was conversing with Kojima regarding the possibility of "doing some [more] Death Stranding stuff".[2][3]

A sequel was first revealed to be in development in May 2022, when Norman Reedus participated in an interview with the outlet Leo Edit to discuss his work on the game. Speaking to Ilaria Urbinati, Reedus exclaimed, "We just started work on the second one". Later in the interview, he would reminisce about how, "the game came out, and it just won all these awards, and it was a huge thing", before reiterating that the development team had "just started part two of that". In response, game writer and director Hideo Kojima would post a series of photos on Twitter, cheekily depicting him punishing Reedus for confirming the game's existence while telling him, "Go to your private room, my friend".[4][5] In October following a series of teases made by Kojima on social media, actress Elle Fanning was announced to have been cast in an upcoming Kojima Productions game, which was later insinuated by producer Katernya Tarasova to be the Death Stranding sequel.[6][7][8]

The game was officially unveiled by Kojima during The Game Awards 2022 in December. Kojima shared that he had written the game's original story sometime prior to 2020, but decided to rework the narrative when faced with new story concepts that reflected the impact of COVID-19 on the rest of the world.[9] The trailer additionally confirmed that Léa Seydoux and Troy Baker would join Reedus in reprising their roles as Fragile and Higgs from the first game, and that Elle Fanning would appear in an undisclosed role. Alongside Reedus, Seydoux, Baker and Fanning, Shioli Kutsuna was also announced to have joined the cast.[10][11] Artist and mechanical designer Yoji Shinkawa as well as composer Ludvig Forsell were also confirmed to reprise their respective duties from the first game.

On December 31, 2023, Kojima explained that the game is in development with ADR work, with Japanese audio dialogue scheduled to be recorded soon.[12]

During January 31's Playstation State of Play, Kojima revealed in a 10-minute trailer new information about the game such as Elle Fanning's character, special appearances by (George Miller/Marty Rhone),[b] and (Fatih Akin/Jonathan Roumie),[c] and new gameplay. Kojima Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed the game's final subtitle On The Beach and set the game's release date for 2025.[13] Filming and motion capture were completed by May 2024, with Kojima adding that the game was in an "adjustment phase" that will take about a year to complete.[14]
