Oronsay, Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle, SusunW, Chocmilk03, Penny Richards, Silver seren, PamD, Curbon7, MSGJ, and all WIR helpers: It sure looks like this is coming together. The page we have not expanded is the island geofocus. That event has two issues: it brings our # of events for June to four, and also I can't tell from the comments if there is group enthusiasm for this. Push it back or change to focus? geofocus is not my thing, but it is a big motivator for others. My own opinion is that we keep the number of new events to three and I think both music and pride will be good draws, So I'd like to move it down the ideas list, to august or September, for when we need something. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 18:00, 20 May 2024 (UTC)

- As I believe it was Rosiestep who originally suggested islands, I agree with her suggestion that we should leave it for later. I hope nevertheless that lack of any geofocus in June will be the exception rather than the rule. Focus on people from specific countries has consistently attracted significant interest and has become a traditional item in our repertoire. I therefore hope very much that there will be consensus to include it again in July, no doubt with the first round of islands.--Ipigott (talk) 06:00, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

Translation contest 2024 July, August, September ?[edit]
See suggestion made here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red#translation contest 2024. Last time we did it: #227 in April-May-June 2022. What about scheduling it for June-July-August 2024? --Rosiestep (talk) 16:04, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Rosiestep and Nattes à chat, If WiR does another translation event I think we should wait until the Alphabet Run ends, so start in July rather than June. Also, are either of you willing to be the point person for tallying articles, or should we use a Fountain registration? The Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/227 page shows the outcomes and general setup for the 2022 version. The talk page of the event gives an idea of the behind the scenes mechanics and barnstars etc. for the 2022 version. I am pinging Oronsay because it would be great to have their feed-back about moving the event and housekeeping tasks. Also pinging Lajmmoore who worked on the last translation event. - Thanks for the ping, @WomenArtistUpdates. I'm afraid I have absolutely no experience with the logistics of this sort of contest and regret I am unable to take it on, given what I currently do towards WIR's overall statistics, running gender reports etc. I have, however, worked out how to create event pages using the new system and am happy to update redlists and proofread pages. - Hi Oronsay! Thanks for the response. Sorry I stated it poorly, but I wanted your opinion of moving the event, I did not mean to suggest you help monitor. Your plate is waaaay too full. That said, I have moved the event to July. WiR does love a challenge and we keeping kicking challenge/contest suggestions down the road because of the effort involved. I think it is time to try out the Fountain tool as a way of tallying entries. Gamaliel has graciously, in the past (years ago??), offered to walk me through setting it up and I will probably be asking for their help at the end of June. It will also be an opportunity to more fully understand how an event template spans months (July through September). I'll be pinging MSGJ for guidance on that as well. - In July 2024, for the second time we are embarking on a three-month translation contest or "translatathon" focused on the translation of biographies of women from other language versions of Wikipedia. For each of the three months, July, August and September, there will be virtual awards for the top three contributors of acceptable new translated articles as well as awards for totals over the full three months. If they wish, contributors may translate from the same foreign language throughout the contest. (Translations from English into other languages are not acceptable for this contest.)
- In line with other Wikipedia contests, articles must have at least 160 words or 1,000 characters of running text (excluding references, lists, boxes and headings) and should have at least two reliable secondary references (three for biographies of living people). Articles translated from shorter versions in other languages will qualify only if they are extended to meet these requirements.

- Looking through our Wikidata Redlists, the following exist: A, B & C: American Samoa, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Bermuda, Cape Verde, Cook Islands, Cuba and Cyprus. It was suggested that the big island I live on (Australia) should not be included, but perhaps women from islands (Kangaroo Island, Thursday Island, Tasmania and so on) could be added under the appropriate letter – no redlists exist for these. Ditto, for Shetland Islands and very many others. For D, E & F: Dominica, Dominican Republic, East Timor, Faroe Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia. For G, H & I: Greenland, Grenada, Guam, Haiti, Hong Kong, Iceland. For J, K & L: Jamaica, Japan, Kiribati seem to be the only ones. M, N & O: Madagascar, Maldives, Malta, Isle of Man, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Mayotte, Federal States of Micronesia, Montserrat, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Northern Cyprus, Northern Mariana Islands. For P, Q & R: Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Réunion, Rodrigues. S, T & U: Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Tuvalu. V, U, W, X, Y & Z: Vanuatu – so we may need to make it S–Z. There are also many islands to be found in the following crowd-sourced lists prepared for the 2017 World Contest: Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, Europe and Oceania. I also thought of Hawaii, for which there is a Wikidata list for Notable Women of Hawaii (dictionary). We could also make it A–F; G–L; M–R and S–Z, if preferred. Checklist for updates of virtual meetups[edit]
This section is purely administrative. It is not about the ongoing discussions of topics.
WiR generally has a variety of monthly, quarterly and annual events. WiR also sends out an “invitation” to its registered participants notifying them of those events. This is an effort to list tasks associated with the administrative tasks of updating and adding pages. We will be maintaining this list to assist with Quality Assurance. This is a working document and should be maintained to reflect current bast practices. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:52, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
As of March 2024 we are working with a new set of cascading templates. Because the template speak to each other the preview of the template might not be as expected. For example 302 might look like 304. Additionally some pages won't preview correctly unless the editor purges the page to update the cache.
The interrelated templates allow us to make changes and pages once, without updating new and past events throughout the WiR ecosystem. This will ultimately reduce mistakes, bad directs, and misinformation. The coders involved are watching these pages to ensure they work correctly. March 2024 is the first iteration. If direction are not clear it is the drafter's fault - not the coders, so please be gentle.

- Step 3 Create a new category for meetup articles (e.g. at Category:WikiProject Women in Red meetup 310 articles). Add the template {{WIR category}} to the new category.
- Step 4 Create the invite (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Outreach/2024#March 2024) using the previous month's invite as a go-by.
- Step 5 Invite and receive feedback from a sufficient number of WiR enthusiasts that the event page and invite are okay. Mark reviewed items with
{{ok}}
- Step 6 Send out MassMessage notification.

- Yes, recently completed can be merged into past events. The reason I did this is that they are kept separate on Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Events so I was following that. One biography a week[edit]
Not many of us are able to write a new article every day but most of us should be in a position to create one biography a week. How about making this a subsection of #1day1woman, starting in January 2024? Each participant could have a separate slot in which their new biographies could be listed. There would be no need for biographies to meet specific criteria such as minimum length but all new articles should meet normal standards of acceptance. We could provide virtual awards for those who manage to continue for three months (with at least 13 articles), six months (26 articles), nine months (39 articles) and for the whole of 2024 (52 articles). Participants should of course be able to create and list more than one new biography a week if they wish but everyone should try to create at least one per week. If contributors are able to keep this up, I believe it could have a significant effect on how we progress. There should be no need to participate from the beginning of January. Participants could join whenever they want and simply calculate periods of three months from the date of their first addition. - This idea is really attractive to me. Doing 1 article a day is just not workable for my schedule, especially since my free time to edit is largely just on the weekends. But managing one women's biography a week seems way more doable. I wholeheartedly support this proposal. SilverserenC 21:05, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Ipigott: Just jumping in to say: I like this idea too. I haven't managed to carve out much time for article creation in a long while, and I'd really like to get back to that in 2024. Are we in touch with what events the world wants WiR to facilitate?[edit]
In a recent discussion on my talkpage with Ipigott regarding WiR events, I asked, ... I'm also curious if we aren't in touch with what events the world wants us to facilitate...
I suggested 3 quarterly campaigns for later this year: social influencers (Apr, May, June), sports (Jul, Aug, Sep), politics (Oct, Nov, Dec). There were also other salient points made in that section of my talkpage. Ian suggested that I shift the proposal regarding the 3 quarterly campaigns here. - I think these three-month opportunities could serve as an important additional attraction. Contributors will have time to become familiar with the background and will be able to write about women who are gaining significance in the modern world. Many of our younger contributors should find the topics more in line with their interests than those requiring an interest in history. While I don't often write BLPs, I look forward, for example, to writing about notable TikTokers and YouTubers. New editor retention[edit]
As a general follow-up to a chat at my user talkpage with Ipigott about mentoring new contributors and ideas related to incentives to improve participation, I don't really have specifics to offer, but instead a few general perspectives to perhaps consider.
My perspective is based on how as an attorney, I became familiar with what is known as 'client-centered lawyering' (brief example overview: Client Centered Lawyering: An Avenue for Change, Aqdas Khudadad, October 12, 2022, University of Cincinnati Legal Clinic), and later in my M.Ed program, 'student-centered teaching' (there are a variety of monikers for this practice) (brief example overview: Student-Centered Learning: In Principle and in Practice (Christa Green and Christopher Harrington, July 20, 2020, Michigan Virtual Learning Research Institute). Ipigott, not to put you on the spot too much, but you seem to take what could be considered an 'editor-centered mentoring' approach, and I think this is a solid foundation upon which further efforts could be developed.
There is substantial research literature available on these subjects that may be helpful to review and adapt for new editor support and retention purposes. I use the term "retention" intentionally because of its use in the education field as a metric, so this may be a helpful keyword.
On a more specific note, maybe it would be helpful for new editors to have access to reflections from editors with more experience, about what it was like to be a new editor, what they wish they knew/what was a surprise to learn, and strategies that helped for coping with challenges. For this Wikiproject, perhaps we could tailor reflections to also include a focus related to writing about women. Beccaynr (talk) 19:24, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
