"Boy from South Detroit" is a song by American singer-songwriter SZA, reportedly featuring American singer and rapper Lizzo. It will be released as a track on Lana, the reissue of SZA's second studio album, SOS (2022).

Background[edit]

SOS, SZA's highly anticipated second studio album, was released on December 9, 2022. It received widespread critical and commercial success,[1][2] debuting atop the Billboard 200, breaking several chart records and milestones,[3] and opening with a score of 94 on the review aggregate website Metacritic.[4] SZA wrote and recorded over 100 songs for the album within a timespan of five years,[5][6] around ten of which she wanted to include on the tracklist but could not. In a January 2023 interview with Most Requested Live, she said any of the 100 songs could appear on the deluxe edition of SOS.[7]

Rob Bisel, one of the album's producers, revealed in a podcast interview with Rolling Stone that a few of the songs written for the album were done with American singer and rapper Lizzo. Prior to this, media outlets speculated that she was set to feature on one called "Boy from South Detroit",[8][9] which SZA confirmed on an Instagram livestream in January 2023.[10]

During the album rollout, many of SZA's unreleased songs were spreading around the Internet. Among them was "Boy from South Detroit", which she said fans had been expecting to be on the album's standard tracklist.[11] According to her, Punch, her label's president, did not accept its inclusion.
