Portal:Computer and video games[edit]

I think our portal is close to becoming a Wikipedia:Featured portal. Any suggestions on how to improve the portal would be most welcome. I think after this peer review is done I'll try and submit it to Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates. See also: Wikipedia:What is a featured portal?. A previous CVG peer review was done about a year ago. jacoplane 21:43, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't check it often — is it well-maintained? As much as I hate to say it, I think we should set up a process for selected pictures and articles, it seems rather random right now. Pagrashtak 02:05, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah it's pretty much random. One of the problems regarding what to enter on the portal is that cover art & screenshots can't usually be used under fair use, so I've been selecting mainly open-source games. One area that probably needs some work is the categories section, I think that's rather outdated. The Did you know? section is also not really maintained, however I do think that the portal is informative for users who are just browsing. jacoplane 01:21, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd rather see a featured article presented without a picture than a stub about an open-source game. Pagrashtak 01:57, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'll do that then. But should we develop some kind of process for selecting which article gets put up? Having a poll for "Featured article of the week" or something like that.jacoplane 03:11, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Another thing we could do is copy what is done on Portal:War, where they have all their featured articles available at places like Portal:War/Featured article/21 (compiled at Portal:War/Featured article). Every time someone presses the "Show new featured content..." link, a new featured article and picture are automatically loaded. Is this a good solution? jacoplane 05:34, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've set it up to test, currently it cycles through 5 different articles, found at places like Portal:Computer and video games/Featured article/3. Is this a good idea? Should we add all the featured articles to this? jacoplane 06:02, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well I did it so that it now cycles through all 27 featured articles. See: Portal:Computer and video games/Featured article. jacoplane 07:46, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A few points likely to come up in a featured portal nomination:
  • There's no list of major topics.
  • The DYK section lacks an archive.
  • Using the FA list from the project directly is a bit questionable. In particular, former featured articles aren't necessarily what you want to be presenting to readers.
  • The WikiProject list should be trimmed of dead projects.
  • The selected picture section should include an image credit where appropriate. What's the rotation schedule there, incidentally?
Other than that, this looks fine. Kirill Lokshin 01:08, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
