  • delete as inappropriate. Cheers, Jack Merridew 02:53, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Templates this specific lead to a walled garden effect and to ownership of articles. This template, (and every one of the other 1632 specific templates) is a stunningly bad idea. Note that if they are all deleted, there will be a heck of a mess to clean up. My comments apply to all 1632 specific templates up for nomination. Fabartus has been counseled about templates that are too specific, IIRC, in the past. But these apparently have been safe behind their walled garden for some time. Template:LithuanianSurname (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

Templates should not be used to include default text like this. It makes it excessively difficult to understand the markup and there is no ability for use references. Plus any uses of {{Pavarde. pradžia}} (see the markup in this version makes it doubly impossible for new editors to have a clue what's going on. Ricky81682 (talk) 01:05, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete and substitute all uses. Per nom. This is definiately going to be confusing for new users. --[midnight comet] [talk] 01:16, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How on Earth is it confusing in its simplicity? - Altenmann >t 01:17, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
For users experienced with templates, this isn't going to be that confusing. But what if a new user tried to edit the transcluded content? They'll probably be thinking "How do I edit this?". --[midnight comet] [talk] 01:24, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    Can you suggest something better, like "header/footer"-style template pairs? - Altenmann >t 01:34, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Subst all the uses and leave it be. Use a bot or something next time. This is not the way to do things. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 02:16, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Who says so it is not the way? Although "subst" is a good idea, since I don't think that the template will change in the future. Why people fire the gun first and think later? I remember there is syntax which makes "subst" obligatory. - Altenmann >t 03:34, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You really think it's helpful to use templates for basic text? Why not subst the current uses, and delete the template? It's not like there's suddenly going to be later uses and it's not like there's suddenly a great need for keeping track of which ones use this. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:55, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also, see this discussion for a very terrible use of this. That was just for this text. This isn't that bad but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:06, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. The template is useful and time saver in area when virtually no one cares to do something. If you find something inconvenient, please help to improve it rather than destruct. Yes there is an ability to use references. "Excessively difficult" is an excessive exaggeration: I didn't use any smart template tricks. Pavarde. pradžia comes from muy laziness: I simply cut and paste it from lithianian wikipedia. It is a plain redirect. If you don't like it, just replace with "LithuanianSurname" when you have spare time. - Altenmann >t 01:16, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Among other things, formalizes dealing with surname characterization, this would be very handy for Latvian as well, which suffers from the same issues. If anyone wants to clarify anything in the template for authors not dealing with the surname issue (but wanting to understand the template better), that's fine too. V??RU???  ☎  02:52, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Again, wouldn't just writing the text out be easier, simpler to implement and just work better? Is having some template really needed? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:55, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: I have no problem is someone keeps this template in their own userspace to help them write this sentence out. Same thing with the Latvian or other languages. That's an issue of MoS concern, not through templates. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:25, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete — See: Wikipedia:Template namespace; "Templates should not masquerade as article content in the main article namespace; instead, place the text directly into the article." Cheers, Jack Merridew 07:11, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This quotation is a disrepectful piece of illiterate obscurity written into a guideline. Nothing is "masqueraded": my template is a standard text, to avoid repetition, as the guideline goes, "place recurring messages into articles in a consistent manner". The other rule from this guideline is equally nonsense: "should not sed to cretate lists of links": A huge number of templates, such as {{WWII history by nation}} and many others do exactly this. Firt you write a lousy guideline, then you use it to disrupt work of other people instead of helping them to do what they need. By the way, a guideline is not a policy and cannot be indisputable reason for deletion, but it seems I am preaching in vain. - Altenmann >t 00:33, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The issue is the accessibility of the article text to all editor — by canning this into a template, and it seems a lot of the usages are *in* Lithuanian, you present a barrier to editing to many editors. fyi, *I* did not write this guideline, but know that it has been in effect for many years. See also: WP:ONLYGUIDELINE (which is part of an *essay*;) Cheers, Jack Merridew 01:23, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - it's Lithuanian language tradition to have man, married woman, and unmarried woman name (there was also an unmarried man diminutive family form, but it's not used any more).--Lokyz (talk) 20:38, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The content will stay; someone will subst the template. It's the use and appropriateness of a template that's of concern. Cheers, Jack Merridew 01:23, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. The template serves its useful purpose: to provides the standard text in many articles. If this standard text is to be changed, it is done in one place, instead of editing hundreds of articles. (That's what I've just done a minute ago. I am not a genius, but I happen to know about Lithuanian surnames, and I had no technical troubles in updating.) If one thinks it has issues, they must be discussed in its talk page. I think similar templates can be useful for Slavic-language (BElarusian, Russian, etc.) surnames as well, where the surname depends on gender. Dzied Bulbash (talk) 17:42, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Make subst'able -- but keep only as an always subst'd template. It could be useful from time to time for editors, and we do have many subst'able templates. However, the category should not be included. It really bothers me that an example for inclusion of commentary text is to reference a different language. That's not good for a language template, and not a good sign for proper usage. Don't forget that because of the parser functions, it needs the "subst=subst:" parameter, and probably a nice comment about what template was placed. See the Category:Standardised user warning templates for example syntax. (I can fix all those things after this discussion is over.)

I don't think this template has ever been used recently. {{Repeat vandal}} practically serves the same purpose, and block notices like {{uw-block1}} are used for IPs that are currently blocked. I propose that this either be deleted or redirected to {{Repeat vandal}}. [midnight comet] [talk] 00:43, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
