INTRODUCTORY

The carrier is an Illinois corporation having its principal office at Chicago, Ill. No individual or company holds a controlling interest in its stock. The records do not indicate that it controls any common-carrier corporation. The property has been operated by the carrier's own organization since date of acquisition, except for the period July 1 to December 10, 1926, when it was operated by receiver of Chicago, Peoria and St. Louis Railroad Company for account of the carrier. The road acquired, under our authority dated December 21, 1925, 105 I.C.C. 243, was formerly a part of the property of the Chicago, Peoria and St. Louis Railroad Company which was sold at foreclosure sale, November 20, 1924.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated June 15, 1925, under the general laws of Illinois to acquire and operate that part of the railroad, formerly owned by the Chicago, Peoria and St. Louis Railroad Company extending from Springfield to Lock Haven, Ill., as authorized by us December 21, 1925, 105 I.C.C. 243. The date of its organization was June 15, 1925.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The road, all owned, inventoried as of date of valuation as 78.786 miles, was all acquired July 1, 1926, from individual purchasers who had previously acquired it at foreclosure sale of November 20, 1924, from the Chicago, Peoria and St. Louis Railroad Company under our authority December 21, 1925, 105 I.C.C. 243. Three predecessors of that company constructed the property, as follows: St. Louis, Jerseyville and Springfield Railroad Company, 59.200 miles, Laomi to Dow, Ill., 1880-88; The St. Louis, Alton & Springfield Railroad Company, 6.500 miles, Dow to Lock Haven, Ill., 1888-92; and St. Louis, Chicago and St. Paul Railroad Company, 13.608 miles, Springfield to Laomi, Ill., 1892-97. The total recorded mileage is thus 79.308 miles, or 0.522 mile greater than the mileage inventoried as of date of valuation. The carrier took possession July 1, 1926, and began operation by its own organization December 10, 1926.

The road was sold at foreclosure October 29, 1897, to the St. Louis, Chicago and St. Paul Railway Company of Illinois and passed through several owners to the Chicago, Peoria and St. Louis Railroad Company. When that company's property was sold at foreclosure in November 1924 the road built by this company was divided; 6.5 miles, Dow to Lock Haven, Ill., was conveyed to the carrier and the remainder to the Alton & Eastern Railroad Company.

ST. LOUIS, JERSEYVILLE AND SPRINGFIELD RAILROAD COMPANY, PREDECESSOR OF THE ST. LOUIS & SPRINGFIELD RAILROAD COMPANY

The St. Louis, Jerseyville and Springfield Railroad Company was incorporated under the general laws of Illinois, November 26, 1880, to build and operate a railroad from Springfield to a point on the Mississippi River near Grafton, Ill. There are no available accounting records of this company. It built a single-track railroad from Bates to Grafton, Ill., about 71 miles, which it operated until December 1, 1886, when the road was leased to the St. Louis and Central Illinois Railroad Company. The lessee continued operation of the road until November 26, 1888, when it was sold to The St. Louis, Alton & Springfield Railroad Company. The property passed through several owners to the Chicago, Peoria and St. Louis Railroad Company. When that company's property was sold at foreclosure in November 1924 the road built by this company was divided; 59.2 miles, Loami to Dow, Ill., was conveyed to the carrier and the remainder to the Alton & Eastern Railroad Company.
