Rename[edit]

Per this discussion, Template:Sportscar season is being renamed to a more generic name. Here's the plan:

  1. Rename the template to a more generic name ("Template:Motorsport season"), leaving a redirect from the old name in place checkY
  2. Add a new parameter "Series" which duplicates the existing parameter "Sportscar_series"; add "if"s such that unpopulated parameters aren't displayed checkY
  3. Update all the transclusions to use the new template and parameter names (noting that non-updated transclusions will still work in the meantime) checkY
  4. Remove the old (now unused) parameter "Sportscar_series" checkY
  5. (optionally) delete the redirect.

What to do when an event is inaugural?[edit]

The parameter 'previous' appears to always link something. It's not clear to me what to do when an event is inaugural. Can somebody please add that to the documentation? I've tried to fix 2016 Hampton Downs 101, but failed to come up with something sensible. Schwede66 23:20, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Leave previous parameter blank and it will simply display None on the page under the Previous heading. The359 (Talk) 00:25, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried that, but it's not blank. Could you please have a go? Schwede66 08:15, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'd also point put that this template is for seasons, not for singular events. <span style="color: (Talk) 00:26, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Undiscussed format change[edit]

Can someone please revert the recent undiscussed change to the format of this template, which significantly alters the appearance of the template, especially on Formula One season articles, e.g. 2019 Formula One World Championship (original format on the left, revised format on the right):

2019 FIA Formula One World Championship
Drivers' Champion: Lewis Hamilton
Constructors' Champion: Mercedes
Pole Trophy: Charles Leclerc
Previous: 2018 Next: 2020
Races by country · Races by season

Support series:
FIA Formula 2 Championship

FIA Formula 3 Championship

The old one looked better to me too. Pelmeen10 (talk) 22:51, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
 Done @Izno: please discuss changes which significantly change a template's appearance — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:58, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@MSGJ: WP:BOLD is still an editing guideline, thanks. --Izno (talk) 00:34, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As for change of appearances, this template should probably be using a standard {{infobox}} instead of this currently quite hacky solution. --Izno (talk) 00:34, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion - Add Start and End dates[edit]

Suggestion: It would be useful to add start_date and end_date optional parameters to the infobox to define exactly when the season took place and how long ago that was. For example:

start_date = {{start date and age|yyyy|mm|dd|df=<y/n>}}
end_date = {{end date and age|yyyy|mm|dd|df=<y/n>}}

If the Wikipedia community thinks that this is a good idea, could someone authorized to edit this template please add it. Thanks. Truthanado (talk) 02:04, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've advertised this discussion at WT:MOTOR. DH85868993 (talk) 04:04, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Largely neutral, but slightly leaning towards support - I think this is a perfectly reasonable addition but not necessarily an essential one. Generally this information should be cited and appear in the prose as well as the calendar, and in a few cases it might be unclear which dates to use (for example if GT and prototype classes have their seasons end on different dates), but it provides fairly key information in an easily accessible place, and can contextualise the difference between a year long championship and something like the Tasman Series or Can-Am. HumanBodyPiloter5 (talk) 04:18, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Follow up: Oppose adding information about how long ago the dates in question were - It's unclear what this achieves. It seems completely redundant. HumanBodyPiloter5 (talk) 14:56, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Weak support - It takes up little space in an already small infobox and is always mentioned, if not in the lead then in the body, so I can think of no reason to oppose. But, I also question if such details are sufficently note-worthy in the long-run to warrant a place in the infobox (hence why my support is weak). SSSB (talk) 09:46, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Flexbox layout[edit]

I've changed the table layout to a flexbox layout. This fixes some Linter complaints, but more importantly, it centers "Previous" and "Next" better. See previous table layout, where "Previous" and "Next" appear off-center. Everything else should look the same within a pixel or two. Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 23:23, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mobile display isn't ideal. Had to center instead of float, due to long nowrap strings sometimes passed to this template. Could do a nice narrow float layout if those nowraps went away. Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 00:18, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
