Adding a "coordinates" parameter

How about adding a "coordinates" parameter as seen on German stations infobox ? Coordinates are extremely useful, especially for software using Wikipedia data. See early discussion and ideas here and please let me know what you think about adding this parameter :-) Nicolas1981 (talk) 07:53, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

If you look, most Tokyo station articles have coordinates. Personally, I don't see any advantage in including them in the infobox. In fact, this would tend to clutter up the infobox, as opposed to the unintrusive style currently used. --DAJF (talk) 08:13, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, you are right, I wonder why Wikitude does not show them. Which of the following format should I use ? :

Meidaimae Station: {{coord|35|40|6.11|N|139|39|1.81|E |region:JP_type:landmark |display=title}}

Unaware of this debate, I've added an optional coordinates parameter, as I'm doing to many other infoboxes, including those for other countries railway stations: see Category:Templates generating hCards and Geo. Using {{coord}} (which supersedes "coor title dms" and the other templates in that family) in this field will also add pages to the Google Earth/ Wikipedia layer. doc page categories

Is there a way to change the examples shown on Template:Infobox japan station/doc so that that doc page itself isn't put in all the various example categories, like Category:Railway stations opened in 1897? --Delirium (talk) 03:14, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Categorization by "Year opened" can be avoided by inputting a year for which no "Railway stations opened in" category has been created (e.g, 1701). Thus I amended the doc accordingly. I have no idea how to avoid "Railway stations in X Prefecture" categorization. --Sushiya (talk) 12:23, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Ah, it looks like there's a feature request that hasn't been implemented yet that'd let you do something like <nocategory>{{template stuff}}</nocategory> to keep the template from being allowed to insert categories on pages like this. A bit of discussion at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_49#__NOCATEGORY__. So for now yeah that workaround seems best. --Delirium (talk) 16:38, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

You could use subst: in the template invocation, save it, then edit out the category. See Help:Substitution. It will still document ok, just need to remember to redo the subst: each time the template changes. Alex Sims (talk) 10:16, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Is there any reason why there is a "year opened" categorisation but no "year closed" categorisation? This seems inconsistent, and no-one creating or editing a page using this template would expect the need to add the "year closed" category manually when the "year opened" category is generated from the template parameter. two stats numbers

This template includes a "stats" parameter, explained as the number of passengers per day, but that statistic is often broken down into two numbers, the total number of passengers and the total minus passengers who are only getting off（降車客含まず）. Which one is "stats" intended for? Should another parameter be created for both of these numbers? Thanks haplo (talk) 17:14, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Wrapping name in {{nihongo2}}

Any objections to putting {{nihongo2}} around the name? See the sandbox for code (minus categories and the like). See User:Cxw/test1 for an example. It looks the same, but has the Kanji marked as such in the code. —Cxw (talk) 18:44, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Establishments in Japan by year

Since the year of opening is used to automatically place the article in the subcategory 'Railway stations opened in (year)' of Category:Railway stations by year of establishment, should it also be used to automatically place the article in the subcategory '(Year) establishments in Japan' of the category Category:Establishments in Japan by year? pipe-linking

I'm attempting to disambiguate links to Esashi, Hokkaidō. In articles such as Esashi Station, I don't see how to modify links within this Infobox so that they point to the correct article (Esashi, Hokkaido (Hiyama) in this case). Nick Number (talk) 14:29, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

@Nick Number: I'm having the same problem - just take a look at the Kita-Hosono Station article. It won't let me enter the village or district names in the infobox. Someone should rewrite the template to accept wikilinks. G S Palmer (talk • contribs) 16:10, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

Brackets if statsnote has an article ... why?

On 6 May 2014 Sushiya put brackets around statsnote if and only if there is an article with such a name. "if year (or something being an article title) is in statsnote, it will be shown in parentheses" was the comment. I suppose there'd have been some reason but it makes no sense to me. Brackets aren't normally used to show the existence of an article, how's a reader meant to guess the purpose of them or even benefit at all? Perhaps I'm missing something but why keep these? I just wanted to show year in parentheses because some editors input only four-digit year to statsnote field making "Statistics" line of the template looks somewhat odd. However I had no idea to know whether the text in statsnote is a year or not, I then turned to use the logic that all years have own article and no other text reasonably expected to be in statsnote does not. --Sushiya (talk) 02:23, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

I see. It would be more efficient and reliable, though, to check whether the input is a valid date (and/or number). For example, we could use {{#iferror:{{#time:{{{statsnote|X}}}}}|{{{statsnote|}}}|({{{statsnote}}})}}}} (as I put in the sandbox). Jimp 04:02, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

I have reverted the changes, as a large number of station articles already have years added in parentheses, resulting in double parentheses, which is not an improvement. If a fix can be added to add parentheses only if the entry does not already contain parentheses, then that would be OK. --DAJF (talk) 12:42, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
