New template[edit]

This is my first attempt at a template. Seasoned wikicoders, feel free to take this start, and run with it.

Since there seem to be no infoboxes tailored to climbers, I tried to make this fit the specs requested at Wikipedia:WikiProject Climbing#People (quoted below). --Justin (talk) 23:10, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A template will provide a common set of features on a climbing topic organized into a consistent format. The template will include an infobox, that contains the following attributes:

  • Name
  • Birth-Death
  • Birthplace
  • Type of climber (trad, boulder, free solo etc.)
  • First Ascents (notable)
  • Named Routes (notable)
  • Major Ascents
  • Sponsors/Companies
  • picture(s) and caption. The caption should include month and year if known.
  • Highest grade climbed

Additional fields[edit]

This template could be improved by including two additional fields in the Personal information section: spouse and children. These are included in the Infobox person template. Bede735 (talk) 12:15, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

|spouse= was added at some point, but there is still no |children= (needed in Alison Hargreaves - I tried embedding into {{infobox person}}, but that is not supported either). |children= in not in {{infobox sportsperson}} (or I would have added it here myself as I can edit this template). So, can either this be made embed-able, and/or |children= be added in sportsperson and here? I found this old discussion that added "generic biography fields" ti IB sportsperson, but children was not included. I think is certainly is another generic biography field (and maybe parents & relatives too). Frietjes or Jonesey95? MB (talkcontribs) 15:51, 28 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I sort of fixed the embedding, but has a double header. you could do the reverse embedding, or we could add more infobox person parameters to {{infobox sportsperson}}, but that should be discussed at {{infobox sportsperson}}. Frietjes (talk) 20:30, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Could we add a "highestfreesolo" to the list of highestgrades (e.g. free solo climbing)? is that hard to do? Aszx5000 (talk) 13:26, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's easy to do, but I'd like to understand the issue (below) first. — hike395 (talk) 14:30, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reason behind having highestgrade conflict with other highest fields?[edit]

Was there a reason behind having |highestgrade= get suppressed by |highestredpoint=, |highestonsight=, and |highestboulder=? The infobox can easily be changed to display all of them. — hike395 (talk) 14:27, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi hike395, I think "highestgrade=" is redundant as it always needs to be qualified by whether it was a redpoint, onsight or bouldering. 'highestfreesolo=' is another possible class (per the free solo climbing article. I you check out some "benchmark" climbing BLPs of the biggest climbers (e.g. Chris Sharma, Alexander Huber, Wolfgang Gullich), some have famous free soloing benchmarks.
I have been doing a lot of work on WP:Climbing in the last year, and would love make some other infoboxes.
  • I think that "| namedroutes=" should be re-labelled as "|routesnamedafterclimber". In most countries, the person making the "|first ascent=" gets to name the route, which is why the description of the template for these items is potentially overlapping. If it was clarified that the "| named route=" was for routes named after the climber (e.g. Catherine Destivelle in Voie Destivelle), then that would make sense.
  • It would be great to re-label "| majorascents=" as "| other non-first ascents=". The template description does clarify it, but I don't think all editors read the description and therefore confuse major ascents with first ascents (find that a lot).
  • If we could re-label "medal record" as "competition climbing record", that would also be helpful (and a link to the competition climbing article (which has been overhauled).
Thanks for your help and attention here. Aszx5000 (talk) 21:46, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Merge with Template:Infobox mountaineer[edit]

I think that Template:Infobox mountaineer could be handled by Template:Infobox climber? A lot of mountaineers do climbing and visa versa. Infobox climber is the most important infobox (and the most detailed) and has the richest level of detail on their climbing/mountaineering career (I think infobox climber capture all of mountaineers career data. The mountaineers infobox items of "famous partnerships", "final ascent" and "retirement age" are very subjective items). The main differences are around the non-climbing data items, which could be just merged? thanks. Aszx5000 (talk) 21:52, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
