Template:External music video is permanently protected from editing because it is a heavily used or highly visible template. Multiple video support[edit]

Hi. Upon using this template today, I had trouble trying to use more than one video in this template. Could someone please try to re-write the template so it supports multiple videos? Thanks. Adammw (talk) 16:43, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to address this topic again. For a single that might have multiple official videos, adding this template 3 times to the infobox will result in 3 separate "Music video" headings. This seems duplicative and takes up more space than is needed. I think it would be much more concise to allow multiple links to be displayed under just one "Music video" heading (and to change it to "Music videos" where there are more than one). Copyright issues[edit]

Links to YouTube vidoes are usually (but not always) copyright violations. Any such copyvio links are a violation of Wikipedia policy and should be removed immediately. Kaldari (talk) 16:08, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Many media companies and artists have official YouTube pages on which they upload their own videos legally. The template can be useful as long as the link is to an official page. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 08:25, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

URL error?[edit]

Does anyone know why the url in this diff made the link not show up in the infobox? I think it may be the "#" in the url. If so, why would that mess it up?--Rockfang (talk) 05:20, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The parser doesn't like it, basically. You can also fix this by naming the attribute, i.e. putting |1=[http:// ... instead of just |[http:// .... Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:06, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Guess what we need is an example of where this is used, because it is certainly not used in this template. The "(identifier)" appears to be a qualifier, a disambiguator. @Paine Ellsworth: Thank you for the ping. Eurohunter is probably referring to a recent change made to {{YouTube}}.
@Eurohunter: This was discussed at Template talk:YouTube#"link=no" by default. My preference would've been just to YouTube (identifier) for the link, but Uzume had suggested a variety of redirects for different things linked from {{YouTube}}. No one object to that form, so that's what I went with.

"YouTube video" is an identifier because it's a unique id.

Finally, the purpose for these types of redirects (ie. {{R from identifier}}) is to remove a lot of clutter from Special:WhatLinksHere/YouTube. There's still more work to do in that regard, but YouTube video (identifier) alone has removed 54,550 direct links to YouTube. –MJL ‐Talk‐^☖ 17:37, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Paine Ellsworth, @Eurohunter: I suggested separate identifier redirects because they seemed to be separate identifiers. They are also split into separate Wikidata properties. I felt YouTube video ID (P1651), YouTube channel ID (P2397), YouTube handle (P11245), and YouTube playlist ID (P4300) naturally aligned with YouTube video (identifier), YouTube channel (identifier), YouTube handle (identifier), YouTube playlist (identifier). Since there weren't properties for such, I just added YouTube show (identifier), YouTube user (identifier) and YouTube custom (identifier) to the suggestion. Perhaps someone will make Wikidata properties for them one day (although YouTube legacy username (Q116547055) and YouTube custom URL (Q116547050) are considered deprecated in favor of YouTube handle (Q116175178)).
