Nancy’s municipal archives is a public service for the city of Nancy. The goal is to advise, collect, classify, curate and give access to the archives, either public or private, from different timelines, from the Middle Ages to now. The building is located 3 rue Henri-Bazin in Nancy, it preserves the city’s memory and its inhabitants’.

The Building’s history

The industrial origin[edit]

The industrial activity is important in the field of shoe-making, in Nancy, during the 19th century, especially with Isaac Gaudchaux-Picard’s work. He was a merchant specialized in selling shoes, and he settled in the Tanneries’s district, to design his own creations.

The industrial shoe-making sector experienced a booming success, with the support of the Spire family, from 1870 onwards. Charles-Édouard Spire bought the premises situated on 5 faubourg Sainte-Catherine (rue Henri-Bazin nowadays) on the 9 novembre 1878, from Raphaël Michiniau, another shoe-maker. Two years later, the shoe manufacture was born.

The Spire Firm[edit]

However, the building faced some challenged. A fire started on the 15 August 1899.[1] This event had catastrophic socio-economic impacts on thr 400 factory workers. Yet, the manufacture kept its production for two years, on the avenue de Strasbourg.[2] A reconstruction was implemented by Nancy in 1900.[3] The next year, the factory was entirely rebuilt by the architect Félicien César. A 25 meters high chimney was added.

André Spire in 1927.

By 1902, Paul Spire took over the management of the factory and became associate with André Coblentz. From now on, the firm was known as « Spico ». It was the most prosperous period for the business. Paul Spire became a member of the Chamber of commerce in Nancy,[4] and a member of the comitte of the Eastern France’s International Fair (Foire internationale de l'Est de la France) in 1909. His factory is presented as a reference in the business.[5]

During the First World Wr, Paul Spire was drafted[6] and his elder brother André is in charge of the factory and takes over the familial business. However, André Spire, who is more versed in intellectual matters rather than industrial ones, faces economic as well as structural problems. The factory is delocalized for a time within the outskirts of Paris, and then to Limoges. It was only in 1922, that the factory came back in Nancy. At the end of the war, the factory decreased in productivity and had to face trade union demands, and many strikes.
