Not To Scale[edit]

If this isn't to scale, why make an image?

Ermm... because even a not-to-scale image can show useful information?! The packaging of the discs are to scale, but not the tracks. The latter would be impossible to show in the same graphic. For example, Blu-ray track pitch is 0.32 μm[1] whereas floppy track pitch is 100 μm[2], 300 times larger – that wouldn't fit well in the same graphic! (Stereo LP groove width is typically 25 μm[3] so the spiral pitch must be at least 25 μm). cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 22:38, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

MiniDisc is NOT CAV![edit]

NO, I'm not going to edit the article.

Used to do that ... MANY years ago.

Nowadays too many zelots on Wikipedia ... do not want to start an edit-war.

Someone else do it, BUT:

MiniDiscs DO NOT SPIN AT CONSTANT ANGULAR VELOCITY, but at constant linear velocity, just like CD. (Should know: Have more than a dozen of them, and - alas - they often need repair).

By the way: Not all floppy disks are CAV neither.

To get more space out of them, Apple Macintosh Floppy Disks spinned at constant linear velocity to ... To the delight of Apple (Who hated cross-platform compatibility at the time) and Sony, who was the sole manufacturer of CLV-floppy-drives. Sorry for not signing. How stupid of Wikipedia to impose the use of them: They're nowere to be found on an AZERTY- Apple- Keybord. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.65.124.166 (talk) 22:04, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Calm down, dear :-) Sorry to hear that you've had a bad experience.
You're correct – well spotted. After reviewing the literature, I found 2 documents which are sufficiently authoritative and explicitly state that MiniDisc is CLV:
  1. Sony, MZ-R701/R701DPC SERVICE MANUAL
  2. Jan Maes, Marc Vercammen, Luc Baert, Digital Audio Technology: A Guide to CD, MiniDisc, SACD, DVD(A), DAT
Trivia: According to the service manual, the system controller has a pin for a "CAV/CLV changeover control signal output" but it's not used, so apparently CAV support was planned for but not implemented.
I'll update the graphic. Cheers, cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 22:20, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
