Fair use rationale[edit]

Regarding the deletion request from Verbcatcher, I believe the use of this image is allowed by the WP:FAIRUSE guideline, which says that within articles whose main subject is the work associated with the cover...the cover art implicitly satisfies the "contextual significance" NFCC criterion (NFCC#8) by virtue of the marketing, branding, and identification information that the cover conveys. (See also this new fair use template which I've added.) WanderingWanda (talk) 18:21, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@WanderingWanda: all ten of the criteria in WP:NFCCP must be met for an image to qualify as fair use. I am happy with the 'Contextual significance' criterion but 'No free equivalent' is not met. In the rationale I challenged this criterion was marked 'n.a.', which is clearly inadequate. In your revised rationale the 'Replaceable?' section discusses the video release, whereas the Columbo article is about the TV series and by extension its lead character. The main subject of the Colombo article is not the video release. The image c:File:Peter Falk - 1973.JPG is an acceptable equivalent free file, as would be a crop of c:File:NBC Mystery Movie stars 1975.JPG. Both these free files show Peter Falk in character as Columbo in his trademark raincoat. I don't think we can keep the DVD cover image unless the public domain claims for the two Commons files are incorrect. Verbcatcher (talk) 19:22, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
