Summary

Description
English: Shows a stretch of the Wanganui River, looking down at two boats moored at a small jetty. These two steamers tied up at the jetty at Pipiriki may have been the ‘Wairua’ and the 'Waiora’, two identical vessels brought to New Zealand in the first decade of the twentieth century. Or one may have been the twin-screw steamer 'Ohura’ which capsized in swollen rapids in 1940 with loss of three crew and the cattle it was carrying at the time. The Wanganui River is renowned for the beauty of its scenery, once being advertised as “the Rhine of New Zealand”. The image is based on a New Zealand Government Publicity photograph. This is No. 15 of a series of 30 cards issued with the larger packets of the brands manufactured by Godfrey Phillips Ltd., and associated companies". The NZ Government publicity photograph on which this postcard is based, is reproduced in a pamphlet inside spread at Eph-A-PARKS-Tongariro-1949-01-inside.
