Summary

Description
English: Photo from 1948 calendar issued by WLW Radio and WINS Radio to benefit The Ruth Lyons Children's Fund. Pictured are Ruth Lyons and Frazier Thomas.
  • Ruth Lyons, long-time Cincinnati broadcaster and hostess of the WLW radio show, Your Morning Matinee, began a fund for holiday gifts for hospitalized children in the late 1930's, when she learned many children who were hospitalized received no gifts. It became the Ruth Lyons Children's Fund and grew to operate in three states. Though Lyons had retired from broadcasting at least 20 years prior to her death in 1988, the Fund continues to provide holiday gifts for hospitalized children.
  • Crosley Broadcasting purchased New York radio station WINS in 1946; the company assisted Lyons in the promotion of the Fund with promotional material. The first booklet for the Fund, "Seeing is Believin'", was issued in 1947. Later promotions were in the form of calendars and were a combination of information and photos of personalities in both radio stations. The booklets and calendars were given to those making a donation to Lyons' Children's Fund.
  • Frazier Thomas was the co-host of Your Morning Matinee for eight years prior to his moving into television work, and has many photos in the booklets and calendars. This image with Ruth Lyons is the photo for the calendar for July 1948.
  • The calendar was designed for distribution to the public and has no visible copyright markings. The radio show moved to television circa early 1950s with a new name, The 50 Club (later The 50/50 Club).
