Summary

Description
English: Labour Corps, Western Front, during World War I. This is one of a series of photographs, several of which have been attributed to John Warwick Brooke, which appear to show members of the South African Native Labour Contingent (SANLC). In this instance a group of black South Africans are shown seated around a brazier outside a wooden hut.

The SANLC were discriminated against because of the racist attitudes of the time. They were used as cheap labour but were denied the right to serve in the army or to be given any recognition of the role they played. In part this was due to the South African government's fear of the native claims for land.
