General note: Robert Knickmeyer was born in Hanover, Germany, on January 3, 1838, but by 1861 was living in Apalachicola, Florida. Knickmeyer enlisted at Apalachicola as a sergeant in Company B of the 4th Florida Infantry Regiment. In 1862 he became a first lieutenant. He fought in the Kentucky campaign, Vicksburg campaign, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and through most of the Atlanta campaign. He was captured at the Battle of Jonesboro in August 1864. After the war he returned to Apalachicola to his wife Mary Louisa and their eight children.
Pictured here in the uniform of the Franklin Guards; the "F" and "G" on his hat stand for this name and the "C" and "3" stand for Company C, Third Battalion of the Florida State Troops.
