| Description |
English: Two public state (Virginia) university women's soccer teams play the final 2013 pre-season exhibition game in Norfolk. The Old Dominion University (ODU) "Monarchs" switch to a new league in 2013, "Conference USA." The Colonial Athletic Association league College of William and Mary (The USA's second oldest institution of higher learning - 1693!) teams are better known as "the Tribe." ODU itself was founded in the 20th century, as an offshoot of the College of William and Mary. W&M was founded by the largess of King William III and Queen Mary II in the 17th Century. "Old Dominion," derives its name from one of Virginia's state nicknames, "The Old Dominion," an honorific of sorts given to Virginia by King Charles II of England for remaining loyal to the crown during the English Civil War. The U.S. Women's national team remains number one in the world in part given the tremendous popularity of soccer among girls and women who play their hearts out in thousands of recreation, school, club, college, and pro league teams. |
