The Farnese Bull depicting the punishment of Dirke. Amphion and Zethos tie Dirke to a bull as punishment for her treatment of their mother, namely that she treated the mother, Antiope, as a slave and wanted to kill her after she escaped.
The sculpture is said to be the second century BCE original sculpted by Apollonius of Tralles and his brother, Tauriscus, but arguments have been made that it is instead a copy from the late second century CE. In either case, since it was excavated in the 16th century, the statue has been restored on a number of occasions that are documented on the wall of the gallery nearby.
