Description[edit]
Image of Mohammed Salehuddin's Malay House, Malacca, c. 1960, Oil on canvas, 61 x 81.3 cm, Collection of National Gallery Singapore
"Primarily a journalist, as well as a comic illustrator who contributed to the weekend paper, Utusan Zaman, the artist Mohammed Salehuddin was the secretary of Persatuan Pelukis Melayu Malaya (PPMM/Society of Malay Artists Malaya), established in 1949 in Singapore. A prominent artist in the 1950s, his work reflected the imaginings of an emerging nation. With the painting titled Malay House, Malacca (c. 1960), you see a Malaccan-style longhouse with an attap roof, raised floor, and open verandah. While traditionally raised to avoid floods or wildlife, a distinctive feature of this house is the tiles on the staircase, commonly with flower motifs and often imported from Europe or China. The concept of importation itself was fresh at the time, and to have a painting capture this economical advancement in architecture was a testament of Mohd Salehuddin’s foresight as an artist."
