| Description |
English: A VNAF Cessna O-1E (s/n SU4981) after that landing on the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV-41) on 30 April 1975 during operation "Frequent Wind", the evacuation of South Vietnam. The plane was piloted by South Vietnamese Air Force Major Buang and carried his wife and five children to safety. Three crewmen are moving toward the plane to assist, two of the deck crews are seen clapping their hands in joy. The aircraft is today on display at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida (USA). |

(Disputed) The crewmen are not "clapping their hands" ; they are signaling the pilot instructions and directions after landing. In addition, the aircraft clearly does not have an arresting gear tail hook.
(Response) According to Larry Chambers, Commanding Officer of the USS Midway at the time, and who also was an eyewitness to the event: "...the aircraft cleared the ramp and touched down on center line at the normal touchdown point. Had he been equipped with a tailhook he could have bagged a number 3 wire. He bounced once and came stop abeam of the island, amid a wildly cheering, arms-waving flight deck crew..." Of course the aircraft didn't have a tailhook, as it was not designed nor intended for carrier landings.
