Héliopolis, le nouveau Caire, doit beaucoup à son promoteur le baron Empain. C'est un ensemble urbain cohérent inspiré des cités-jardins, qui comprend de nombreux immeubles aux architectures intéressantes.

La villa hindoue est un immeuble inspiré des temples indiens qui a servi de résidence au baron Empain lors de ses séjours à Héliopolis.Conçue et réalisée en béton entre 1908 et 1911 par l'architecte français Alexandre Marcel, la villa fut vendue en 1955 à une famille saoudienne.

En 2002, le propriétaire saoudien voulait en faire un casino mais l'opération n'avait pas commencé. Elle n'était pas visitable et était très peu entretenue.
