Description
Cette petite peinture est une étude de Géricault d’après l’un des cuirassiers du tableau d’Horace Vernet, "La Barrière de Clichy. Défense de Paris, le 30 mars 1814", signé et daté de 1820 (Paris, Musée du Louvre). En dépit du sujet, elle ne peut donc être mise en rapport avec le "Cuirassier blessé" réalisé par Géricault en 1814 et ne peut être située qu’à partir de 1820. En raison de sa facture, Philippe Grunchec (1975) a placé cette oeuvre après le retour de l’artiste d’Angleterre, vers 1822-1823. En effet, Géricault, qui passa dans l’atelier de Carle Vernet de 1808 à 1810, a été très lié avec le fils du peintre, Horace Vernet (1789-1863) avec lequel il partageait une véritable passion pour les chevaux et les sujets militaires.
