Summary

Description

English: East coast of the Peloponnese, the Argolic Gulf and a chain of karst springs (coastal and submarine springs, beeing related to their natural water base level).

The karst water at sea level comes mainly from the karstified plateau (500 – 700 m) of the Northeast Peloponnese. Many small karst springs emerge in eight large and several smaller poljes (closed depressions). Their fresh water then collects in katavothres (pl., Greek for ponors) and flows through conduits to the karst base level “sea”. Conduits and karst springs at sea level may be compared with similar karst conditions at coasts of the Mediterranean Sea.
