Breakdown

Fields 1-9 contain the identification portion of the LES:

1. The member’s name (Last, First, MI) 2. The member’s SSAN 3. The member’s current pay grade 4. The date the member entered active duty for pay purposes in YYMMDD format. 5. Actual years of credible service (two digit format) 6. The member’s expiration term of service (ETS) in YYMMDD format (same as expiration of active obligated service). 7. Branch of Service 8. The Accounting & Disbursing Station Symbol Number—identifies each disbursing/finance office (Incirlik is 4018). 9. Period of LES (normally one calendar month). If this is a separation LES, the DOS will appear in this field.

Fields 10-24 contain the entitlements, deductions, allotments, their respective totals, a mathematical summary, date initially entered military service and retirement plan.

10. Names of entitlements and allowances being paid to include retro. If more than 15, overflow printed in remarks block. 11. Description of deductions—includes items such as taxes, SGLI, mid-month pay, dependent dental plan, etc. If more than 15, overflow printed in remarks block. 12. Discretionary and non-discretionary allotments deducted for savings/checking accounts, insurance, bonds, etc. 13. The amount of all unpaid pay and allowances due from the prior LES 14. Total of all entitlements/allowances listed in block #10. 15. Total of all deductions listed in block #11. 16. The total of all allotments listed in block #12. 17. The total of all unpaid entitlements minus deductions and allotments due on current LES—normally EOM pay. 18. The value of all unpaid pay/allowances due to reflect on the next LES (would also appear in block #13) 19. The actual amount of pay to be paid to the member on EOM payday. 20-22. The total amounts for entitlements/allowances, deductions and allotments, respectively. 23. Date initially entered military service. This date is used solely to indicate which retirement plan a member is under. 24. Type of retirement plan: Final Pay, High 3, REDUX or CHOICE (CHOICE reflects members who have less than 15 years of service and have not elected to go with REDUX or stay with their current retirement plan).

Fields 25-32 contain leave information

25. Leave balance brought forward at beginning of FY or when active duty began. 26. The cumulative amount of leave earned during the current FY or current term of enlistment (if the member reenlisted or extended since the beginning of the FY. 27. The cumulative amount of leave used in the current FY or current term of enlistment (if the member reenlisted or extended since the beginning of the FY. 28. The member’s current leave balance as of the end of the period covered by the LES. 29. The member’s projected leave balance to ETS (includes future leave to be earned). 30. The number of days of leave lost. 31. The number of days of leave paid to date. 32. The projected number of days of leave that will be lost if not taken in the current FY. This number will decrease with any leave usage.

Fields 33-38 contain Federal Tax Withholding (FITW) information

33. The amount of taxable earnings this LES period. 34. The cumulative amount of taxable earnings year-to-date. 35. The member’s marital status used to compute the FITW. 36. The number of exemptions claimed for use computing the FITW. 37. The member specified additional dollar amount to be withheld (this is in addition to the amount computed from marital status/exemption). 38. The cumulative total of FITW withheld year-to-date.

Fields 39-43 contain Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA or Social Security) information

39. The wages earned this LES period that are subject to FICA. 40. The wages earned year-to-date that are subject to FICA. 41. Cumulative total of FICA withheld throughout the calendar year. 42. The wages earned year-to-date that are subject to Medicare. 43. The cumulative total of Medicare taxes withheld year-to-date

Fields 44-49 contain State Tax (SITW) information

44. The two digit postal abbreviation for the member’s state of legal residence. 45. The wages earned this LES period that are subject to SITW. 46. The wages earned year-to-date that are subject to SITW. 47. The member’s marital status used to compute the SITW. 48. The number of exemptions claimed for use computing the SITW. 49. The cumulative total of SITW withheld year-to-date.

Fields 50-62 contain additional pay data

50. The type of BAQ (BAH) being paid. 51. BAQ (BAH) dependent code being paid:

A—Spouse C—Child D—Parent G—Grandfathered I—Member married to member/own right K—Ward of the court L—Parents in law R—Own right S—Student (age 21-22) T—Handicapped child over age 21 W—Member married to member, child under age 21

52. The zip code used in the computation of BAQ (BAH)/Variable Housing Allowance (VHA). 53. The amount of rent paid for housing, if applicable. 54. The number of people with which the member shares housing costs. 55. The VHA status; i.e., accompanied or unaccompanied. 56. The Joint Federal Travel Regulation (JFTR) code based on the location of the member for Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) purposes (Incirlik is TU001). 57. The number of dependents the member has for VHA purposes. 58. The JFTR code based on the location of the member’s dependents for COLA purposes. 59. Type of BAS 60. The cumulative amount of charitable contributions for the calendar year. 61. Not used by active component of any branch of service. 62. This field is currently used by the Army only.

Fields 63-75 contain Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) information/data

63. The percentage of base pay elected for TSP contribution. 64. This block currently not used/reserved for future use. 65. The percentage of specialty pay elected for TSP contribution. 66. This block currently not used/reserved for future use. 67. Percentage of incentive pay elected for TSP contribution. 68. This block currently not used/reserved for future use. 69. The percentage of bonus pay elected for TSP contribution. 70-71. These blocks currently not used/reserved for future use. 72. Dollar amount of TSP contributions deducted year to date. 73. Total dollar amount of TSP contributions that are deferred for tax purposes. 74. Dollar amount of TSP contributions that are reported as tax exempt to the IRS 75. This block currently not used/reserved for future use. 76. Remarks: Used to provide general notices from varying levels of command, as well as the literal explanation of starts, stops and changes to pay items in the entries within the “Entitlements”, “Deductions”, and “Allotments” fields. 77. The cumulative total of all entitlements year-to-date. 78. The cumulative total of all deductions year-to-date.
