Summary

Description
English: Hope Quarry. This is a seriously big hole in the ground, from which around 2 million tonnes of limestone are extracted annually to produce around 10% of the UK supply of cement. The cement works was commissioned in 1929 and the existing extraction permissions were granted in 1948, before the Peak District National Park was established. Something of an eyesore but undeniably impressive; this picture was taken from an observation platform just below the footpath at SK158813.
