Summary

Description
English: Name: Gilbert Wheatley

Arrested for: Loitering
Arrested at: North Shields Police Station
Arrested on: 7 July 1904
Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-51-Gilbert Wheatley
The Shields Daily Gazette for 7 July 1904 reports:
“LOITERING.
Today at North Shields, Gilbert Wheatley (19), Byker and James Garvey (18), Gateshead, were charged with loitering in Borough Road and New Quay, for the supposed purpose of committing a felony, at 12.35am on the 6th inst. Chief Constable Huish proved convictions for larceny against both the prisoners and they were each committed for 14 days.”
Gilbert Wheatley doesn’t seem to have mended his ways. Could he be the soldier referred to in The Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer report of 8 April 1916?
“The Easter Quarter Sessions for the Borough of Richmond were held yesterday, before Mr Fekix Palmer, Recorder … Gilbert Wheatley, private in the Northumberland Fusiliers, pleaded guilty to stealing a purse, containing 4s 4d, from Private Yates, on the 12th of February and was sentenced to 12 months hard labour. Wheatley had a record of some 30 convictions.”
These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1).
This set contains mugshots of boys and girls under the age of 21. This reflects the fact that until 1970 that was the legal age of majority in the UK.
