https://la.wikisource.org/wiki/Versus_de_scachis

The codex contains entries of the late 10th to mid 11th century. The verses on chess are dated by Gamer (1954) to just before or just after AD 1000 (associated with the hand of annalistic entries of the 990s, and dated to not later than the first quarter of the 11th century).

De Aleae Ratione
Candida si fides fuerit sibi prima tabella
Non color alterius, hinc aliquando capit.
Hoc iter est peditis, si quando pergit in hostem,
Ordinis ad finem cumque meare potest.
Nam sic concordant obliquo tramite desit,
Ut si regina hic quod et illa queat.
Ast quos vicinos dominis curvosque notavi,
Transverso cursu, sat loca pauca petunt.
Istorum fuerit positus quo quisque colore,
   Primo dissimilem non aliquando pete.
Post primam tabulam, mox fit sibi tercia sedes,
Qua fit reginæ, dissonus ille uiæ.
Preterea cursus equites girosque facessunt,
   Sunt quibus obliqui multiplicesque gradus:
Dum primam sedem quisquis contempnit eorum,
Discolor a prima tercia carpit iter,
Sic alternatim, tenet hunc illumque colorem,
Quælibet ut cursus esse tabella queat.
Date between circa 990 and circa 1025
