Description

Edo-Tokyo Museum - miniature model of Hokusai's studio 01

English: Minature model of Hokusai and O-ei, his daughter, in one of their dozens of homes, a six-tatami room in 2 ken x 2.5 ken house (this is actually larger than many nagaya). Hokusai is painting, and O-ei is working at the hibachi. Historical accounts suggest that this may be a bit unrealisitic; O-ei was also an artist, and seems to have been just as impractical and unconcerned with material goods as her father. Model at Edo-Tokyo Museum, Tokyo, Japan. Based on Hokusai karitakunozu ("Illustration of Hokusai’s Temporary Abode"), a drawing by Tsuyuki I’itsu (a student of Hokusai), kept at the National Diet Library
