Description
English: Edge Hill Yards, Liverpool, with express from Euston.
View eastward from the Picton Road Bridge, towards Manchester (by the historic Liverpool & Manchester Railway), Crewe, London etc.; ex-London & North Western main lines into Liverpool Lime St. The view shows some of the Edge Hill Yard complex, which in those days was still handling well over 2,000 wagons a day, including over half the traffic of the Port of Liverpool. The celebrated 'Gridirons' and Sorting Sidings being on the north side of the main lines; the sidings on the right led to the Downhill Carriage Sidings and the Cheshire Lines Goods station. On the far left is Edge Hill Goods station and rising past it is the line leading to the Olive Mount Loop, which crosses beyond the flyover (carrying the Wapping Goods lines) visible in the distance. The express on the Down Main is the 07.45 from Euston, headed by 'Princess Royal' 4-6-2 No. 46209 'Princess Beatrice'
